Seki City, Japan’s capital of blade making.
It is said that the industry’s origins date back to the Kamakura period (1185–1333), when swordsmiths moved to Seki, as the area had an ideal environment for swordmaking: high-quality pine charcoal, fertile soil, and pristine water flowing down from the surrounding mountains.
In this superb environment, the swords they created captivated numerous warlords during the Sengoku period (15th–16th centuries) for their sharpness and ease of use. This reputation eventually spread throughout Japan, and Seki developed to the point that it became known as the blade capital of the country.
Master SwordsmithSeki no Magoroku
Many renowned master swordsmiths were born in Seki.
Among them, Magoroku Kanemoto II was renowned as an outstanding swordsmith.
As he lived in Seki, he was also known by the name “Seki no Magoroku”.
Seki no Magoroku created visually stunning, incredibly durable, and exceptionally sharp swords by his unique forging technique. The craft and spirit embodied in Seki no Magoroku’s motto—“unbreakable, unbending, and cut well”—have been passed down along with his name.
